Clitoral suction toys (sometimes called clit suckers or clitoral stimulators) work by creating pulses of air around the clitoris. They feel a bit like a rhythmic tapping and have been likened to very good oral sex. Whatever they are, they work. Big fan over hear. Well done.
Because they use suction rather than vibration, they can sometimes leave temporary marks on the skin and, in rare cases, leave your clitoris swollen. If you (or your partner) have noticed faint marks or redness after using one, or you seem to be in some kind of discomfort, it can be a bit surprising the first time.
In most cases this is completely normal and fades quickly. However, understanding why it happens can help you avoid it if it’s uncomfortable.

Why Do Clitoral Suction Toys Leave Red Marks?
The Suction Creates Temporary Pressure
Clitoral suction toys work by forming a seal around the clitoris and creating pulses of air pressure which work by stimulating the thousands of nerve endings inside the clitoris.
This suction can occasionally leave temporary marks similar to light suction marks on the skin. These usually appear as mild redness or a faint circular mark and in most cases they disappear within a short time once the skin recovers.

Using High Settings Can Increase Pressure
Many clitoral stimulators like the LELO SONA 3 have very powerful motors, particularly on the higher settings.
If the toy is used on a strong intensity level, the suction pressure can become stronger and may leave temporary marks more easily.
If this happens frequently and you’d rather it didn’t, try:
- Lowering the intensity
- Using the toy for shorter periods
- Taking breaks between use
This usually reduces the likelihood of marks appearing.
Holding the Toy Too Firmly
It’s easy to assume the toy needs to be pressed firmly against the body like a wand vibrator might, but clitoral suction toys generally work best with gentle contact.
Pressing the toy tightly against the skin can increase the suction pressure, which may cause temporary marks and even irritation.
Allowing the toy to rest lightly against the body usually creates a better seal and a more comfortable sensation.
Sensitive Skin Can React More Easily
Everyone’s skin reacts differently to pressure. Some people have more sensitive skin, which can make them more prone to temporary redness or marks after suction.
If your skin tends to mark easily in general, you may notice this more with clitoral suction toys and using lower settings and shorter sessions can often help.
Lubrication Can Reduce Friction
Adding a small amount of water-based lubricant around the mouth of the toy can make the seal smoother and more comfortable.
Lube can help the toy glide slightly rather than pulling against the skin, which can reduce pressure and irritation.
When Marks Are Not Normal
While mild redness that fades quickly is usually harmless, there are a few situations where you may want to stop using the toy.
If you notice:
- Bruising
- Persistent soreness
- Marks that don’t fade after several hours
- Broken skin, irritation or any pain at all
it’s best to stop using the toy and allow the area to recover.
In rare cases, very strong suction or faulty toys can cause irritation. It could also be worth considering whether you have an allergy to the material that the toy is made from, or lubricant you’re using. If you have persistent pain of any kind, stop using the toy. It’s always best to consult with your GP to investigate the cause.
Could the Toy Be Too Powerful?
Some clitoral suction toys are significantly stronger than others. Premium models often have very powerful motors, which can be mindblowing for many users but a little intense for others.
If a particular toy consistently feels too strong, it may simply not be the best match for your sensitivity level; trying a toy with gentler suction or a different mouth design can sometimes make a big difference.

Red Marks? What To Do
Temporary redness or light marks from a clitoral suction toy are usually harmless and fade quickly; they’re simply a result of the suction pressure the toy uses to create stimulation or from pressing it too hard against your body when using it.
Using lower intensity settings, adjusting positioning and taking short breaks can usually prevent marks from appearing.
If your clit sucker consistently feels too strong, even on the lowest setting, it may be worth trying a different model that suits your sensitivity better or trying a small vibrator instead.
And of course, if there is any pain or persistent redness, stop using the toy and seek medical advice from your GP.
