What Are Clitoral Stimulators (Clit Suckers) and How Do They Work?

Clitoral stimulators, often nicknamed clit suckers, have become one of the most popular types of sex toys in the last decade.

Unlike traditional vibrators, these toys use air pulse or sonic wave technology to stimulate the clitoris without direct vibration. The result is a deeper, more focused sensation that many people find more intense than standard vibrators.

But what exactly are clitoral stimulators, how do they work, and why do so many people swear by them?

Why Clitoral Stimulation Matters

Well, did you know that women, on average, get the rough end of the deal when it comes to sexual pleasure? Statistically, they have fewer orgasms during sex; this is known as the ‘Orgasm Gap‘.

No, I can’t really explain why. I mean, there is a myth that women’s orgasms are somehow more difficult to achieve than men’s, but it just isn’t true. Given the right stimulation, there really is nothing easier, and it can be done over, and over, and over, until you have to go collect the kids from school or take the bins out.

However for most women, you really need to get the clitoris involved as it’s estimated that fewer than 10% of women can climax through penetration alone.

The clitoris contains more than 10,000 nerve fibres, making it more sensitive than a man in the comment section on social media. The clit provides no real reproductive purpose – it is literally just there to provide pleasure – and yet it gets roundly ignored way too often. Get the clit involved and suddenly that gap skews in the opposite direction. You lucky devil.

That’s where clitoral stimulators (or ‘clit suckers’) come (fnar) in.

What are Clit Suckers?

Traditionally, vibrators were the only option for female-centric non penetrative sex toys, but clitoral suction toys are different to vibrators. See how they compare here.

Now you can get toys like the LELO SONA 3, Biird Namii, the Rose Toy or the Satisfyer Pro (reviewed in detail in this post here) which can stimulate all the nerve fibres inside the clit and not just the ones on the surface. They all have a range of settings so you can decide how much stimulation you need to get to where you want to go.

How Clit Suckers Work

Clit suckers have a small recess/hole in the top where the suction comes from. You place directly on your clit to provide battery-powered localised consistent stimulation directly to the most sensitive part if your body with epic results.

Clitoral suction toys don’t actually “suck” the clitoris in the way the name suggests. Instead they use air pulse technology. Specifically, they have a pulsing membrane inside the mouth of the toy which pushes air in pulses toward the opening (imagine how a speaker works!) and it feels a bit like a rapid tapping, but with less pressure than a finger.

what is the deal with clit suckers / clitoral stimulators?

Because the stimulation is indirect, many people find the sensation:

  • deeper than traditional vibration
  • less numbing over time
  • capable of producing quicker orgasms

It’s a very good feeling.

Premium toys like the LELO SONA 3 use sonic wave technology, which sends vibrations deeper into the clitoral structure.

Do Clit Suckers Actually Work?

For many people, yes – they work extremely well. Clitoral suction toys are popular because they provide very targeted stimulation to the most sensitive part of the body. Because the stimulation doesn’t rely on strong surface vibration, they can feel more intense while also being more comfortable for longer sessions.

If you’re already in the mood then a good clit sucker can deliver a near instant orgasm and then another one 30 seconds later. Some liken them to very good oral and once you try one, you won’t be disappointed.

They aren’t even particularly expensive as sex toys go; although you can get some luxe models, if you are on a budget you can find cheap clit suckers which do the job.

I can’t figure out how to turn on the lemon 🍋. I read thar you lube the lemon, and put your clit right on the hole. But what then? How do I start the lemon’s sucking motion? I need directions. Thank you.

    1. I’ve not used that particular model, but usually there will be an on/off button on the side indicated by a circular raised area. I imagine you press in for three seconds to turn on and off, and do a short press to change the intensity or the mode. That’s usually how they work!
