Over the past couple of years we’ve tested quite a few manual male masturbators, ranging from reusable sleeves like the Fleshlight Masterstroke and Flight Pilot through to the discreet-looking silicone Arcwave Pow. We also tried out one of TENGA’s disposable egg masturbators which, if I’m being polite, did not exactly leave us emotionally transformed.
So when two of the reusable TENGA Flip range arrived for us to review, we were curious whether these would finally be the products that explained why some men online talk about TENGA like it’s the second coming.

But after testing both side-by-side, the surprising thing was not which one was best. It was how similar they actually felt considering one costs nearly twice the price of the other.

First Impressions of These TENGA Male Masturbators

The TENGA Flip Zero Luxury Male Masturbator and TENGA Flip Orb Blue Male Masturbator both look pretty premium straight out of the box. Sleek packaging, clever design, nice materials, and significantly less ‘hidden at the back of the bedside drawer in shame’ than some male sex toys.
The Flip Zero comes in two parts; the soft elastomer toy and a hard black plastic sheath which slides over the toy to lock it in place. It also comes with a case that looks a bit like a cloche, which seems a little pointless. The Flip Orb meanwhile just has a little cap to cover the end, which is fine.

If you crack both toys open like a book, which you can – that’s how you open them to get them clean – you can see that inside of the stroker is made of soft TPE bumps, ridges and fun little balls which deliver different sensations in use. It looks a bit like a weird, see-through pinball game.
In use, the thing we noticed with both TENGA toys is that they were tight; much tighter than a Fleshlight.
There is also noticeably less internal room overall, particularly compared to larger sleeves or open-ended masturbators. If you are used to softer, more forgiving toys, the TENGA Flip range feels much more restrictive and structured.

That tighter design creates stronger suction and pressure, but it also means you need significantly more lubrication. Because of the tighter internal space, these are probably better suited to average girth users than those wanting a roomier sleeve-style experience.
Realistically, both toys required at least twice as much lube as a Fleshlight during testing. If not, the tighter fit could start feeling draggy rather than pleasurable quite quickly.
What’s The Difference Between The Flip Zero And Flip Orb?
Honestly? The difference between the TENGA Flip Zero and the TENGA Flip Orb was less than we expected considering the price difference.
The Flip Orb has a full RRP of £69.99, and was £55.99 at time of writing, and the Flip Zero costs almost double with an RRP of £119.99, on sale £95.99 at time of writing. That isn’t a small difference.
They do technically have different internal textures and pressure systems, but during actual use the overall experience felt pretty similar. In fact, during blind testing there was no immediate moment where the more expensive toy obviously stood out as superior.

The main difference is that the Flip Zero feels tighter, firmer, more suction-heavy and generally more intense, whereas the Flip Orb feels softer, slightly more forgiving, easier to use and and more adjustable during use.
The Flip Orb also seemed to manage airflow better. Pushing further created a kind of air-pressure effect which increased grip without making the toy feel overwhelmingly tight.
By comparison, the Flip Zero sometimes felt like it retained less lubrication internally, becoming slightly drier during longer sessions despite using the same amount of lube in both toys for testing consistency.
Which One Actually Felt Better?
Unexpectedly, during blind testing the cheaper Flip Orb ended up being our preferred toy overall. Not because the Flip Zero was bad – they were both very nice masturbators, felt great and did the job well – but because the extra intensity and tightness did not necessarily make it more enjoyable.
The Orb simply felt easier to use and more comfortable, while being more flexible in terms of pressure control.

One particularly clever aspect of the Orb is that squeezing different areas of the case changes where pressure is focused internally. You can create more pressure around either the head or shaft quite easily, which gives it a bit more variation during use.
The Flip Zero, by comparison, felt more uniformly tight the whole way through.
And crucially, there was no immediate ‘oh this is obviously the premium one‘ moment despite the significant price jump.
If you are not drowning in money, it is probably tricky to justify spending almost double!

Noise & Realism
Oddly enough, the cheaper Flip Orb also sounded more realistic during use. The softer casing and airflow create slightly wetter, squelchier noises which actually make the experience feel more natural rather than mechanical.
The Flip Zero is quieter and more controlled sounding, which some people may prefer, but the Orb felt slightly less clinical overall.
Cleaning & Maintenance
This is where these kind of TENGA male masturbators are pretty good. Cleaning any TPE toy is absolutely essential if you don’t want to risk mould and recurrent infections, which you don’t. The entire case on both the TENGA Flip Orb and Zero masturbators opens fully with a click, allowing you to clean the internal sleeve properly, rinse everything thoroughly and dry the toy far more easily than closed male masturbators.
It is one of those features that sounds minor until you use a toy that doesn’t do this – it’s a whole world easier than cleaning a TPE sex doll, for instance.
Once dry, both toys simply click back together again. It is clever, simple, and practical.
Build Quality Problems For The TENGA Flip Zero
Unfortunately, there was one issue with the Flip Zero during testing; while cleaning the toy, the hinge on the black Flip Zero snapped. It’s hard to see in the image but the toy is now held together by the TPE – it doesn’t affect it in use, but it does make it less solid and it probably won’t last the 50 times that it claims on the product description.

Importantly, this did not happen during use, it happened while cleaning it afterwards.
Once closed, the toy still functioned normally, but when opened there was now a sharp piece of exposed plastic around the broken hinge area.
For a product costing over £100, that is not ideal, although I have absolute faith that had we purchased it outselves, Lovehoney would have replaced or refunded with no quibbling; it’s one of the reasons I recommend them above other retailers.
To be fair, this could have been a one-off defect as it affected just one of the two products. It may have been caused by accidental stress on the hinge or simply bad luck, but it is still worth mentioning, particularly given the premium pricing.
Interestingly, the cheaper Flip Orb actually felt slightly less delicate overall despite costing considerably less.
Are TENGA Male Masturbators Better Than Fleshlights?
It really depends on what you want. Compared to Fleshlight-style toys, we thought that the TENGA toys looked more premium, but were tighter requiring more lubrication and more suction-focused. The lack of an open end on the TENGA designs also makes them feel less forgiving overall.
In our opinion, Fleshlights are roomier, somewhat softer, easier to use and of course depending on which one you buy, can be slightly more realistic anatomically.
An open-ended design would probably improve airflow, make positioning easier and reduce some of the excessive suction; that said, if intense grip and pressure are your thing, TENGA absolutely delivers.
Final Verdict: Which TENGA Masturbator Should You Buy?

For most people, the TENGA Flip Orb Blue Male Masturbator is probably the smarter buy.
It is not only considerably cheaper but we found it more comfortable, easier to use and, ultimately, the more enjoyable of the two TENGA male masturbators.
The TENGA Flip Zero Luxury Male Masturbator is more intense and tighter, but the performance gap simply did not feel large enough to justify the huge jump in price, and our review unit broke after a few uses.
Unless you specifically want maximum suction and pressure, the Orb feels like the better-balanced option, and to be honest, that was not the result we were expecting going into this review.
